Fort Fizzle

fortfizzle.jpg

Fort Fizzle was the site of an encounter between American Forces and the Nez Perce during their attempted flight to Canada. The Nez Perce were fleeing from Army efforts to force them onto a reservation in Idaho. The US Army was pursuing them. A small group of Army regulars, and a much larger volunteer militia group were dispatched to stop the Nez Perce until the main Armu force could catch up with them. No fighting actually took place here. After three days of discussion (The Army wanted them to surrender. The Nex Perce wanted to go through), the Nez Perce found a way to by-pass this make-shift fort which was intended to block their way. This all happened in late July, 1877. This was later called "Fort Fizzle" because the efforts to stop the Nez Perce just sort of fizzled out. FYI, Nez Perce is a French name. They called themselves Nee-Mee-Poo (also spelled Nimiipu). - Fort Fizzle -
