Emerald Mound is one of the largest ancient mounds in North America. It measures 435 by 770 feet at the base. It is 35 feet higher than the surrounding terrain. Atop the main mound are two other mounds. The larger of the two is 190 by 160 feet, and 30 feet high. Mant siurces say Emerald Mound was built and used between 1250 and 1600 (AD or CE, your choice). According to the National Park Service, the occupants of Emerald Mound abandoned the site around 1600, and moved south to what would later be called the Grand Village of the Natchez. It is located on the Natchez Trace just over 10 miles from Natchez, Mississippi.
