Missouri River Headwaters

This was one of the destinations of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. They arrived here in July 1805. Upon arriving here, Sacajawea recognized the area. She had been captured here in a raid by the Hidatsa when she was a child. It is called three forks because it is here the Missouri splits into the Madison, Jefferson and Gallatin Rivers. According to the USGS, the Missouri River officially starts where the Madison and Jefferson merge. - Missouri River Headwaters -
