On August 27, 1959, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck the area of Hegben Lake about 12 miles from here. Two fault zones were affected by the quake. 37 million cubic yards of Madison Canyon slide into the valley, daming Madison River. Hebgen Lake sunk as much as 22 feet, with much of it being severly tilted. A large tsunami swept over the dam and swept through Madison Canyon. Between the quake and tsunami, 26 people in local campgrounds were killed. - Earthquake Lake, Montana -
